Forty minutes south, the Chesapeake Bay Bridge/Tunnel, the world's largest bridge-tunnel complex, places you in the Norfolk/Virginia Beach area. While in Norfolk make sure to visit the Chrysler Museum of Art; Nauticus - The National Maritime Center; the Virginia Zoological Park and The Wells Theater among other wonderful attractions. An absolutely "not to be missed" destination is Virginia Beach's Virginia Marine Science Museum.
Then continue to Newport News to visit America's premier maritime museum, The Mariners' Museum, where you'll see artifacts from the USS Monitor and CSS Virginia (Merrimack), including the Monitor's propeller and shaft.
Next stop, Williamsburg - The historic reconstruction is not to be missed. Top the day off with a trip to Busch Gardens with its Water Country USA, always a favorite for fun and excitement.
If you'd rather go north, visit Chincoteague and Assateague Islands, famous for their wild horses and nature preserves.
