PURCHASING A JACK RUSSELL TERRIER PUPPY?
HERE ARE SOME TIPS!
Are you interested in purchasing a Jack Russell Terrier puppy? Whether you're looking for a competitive champion potential or a loving pet, you're going to have important decisions to make. Here are some hints to help make the decision making process produce the results you're looking for.
Start out by researching the breed.
You can do that by going to the library or looking on the Internet.
Be sure to call several breeders and ask the following questions:
- Can I meet the Sire and Dam of the pups?
- Are the Sire and Dam registered by the Jack Russell Terrier Club (JRTCA)?
- How many years have you been breeding?
- Are there any genetic problems in your dogs (i.e. hearing, soundness)?
- Will the puppies be registerable?
- Do you offer a health guarantee?
- Will I get the necessary paperwork to register my pup (i.e. pedigree, stud service certificate)?
- Are you a breeder who I be able to contact regarding problems or questions in the future?
Then ask yourself:
- Do the parents of the puppies have the kind of temperament that I desire in my pup?
- Are the premises & dogs clean?
- Do they appear to be in good health?
- Is the breeder breeding to the standard of the JRTCA?
- *MOST IMPORTANTLY - Is the Jack Russell the right dog for me and can I cope with their level of activity?
The Jack Russells are a wonderful & intelligent breed of dog. But they are not for everyone. They require lots of exercise and a fenced yard. They do not do well in an apartment with no yard or with someone who works an 8 hour day. Remember purchasing a puppy is a life long commitment, so make the right decision for yourself and your pup.
